We all should brush effectively twice daily using a soft brush. Most people are only concerned about the brand of toothpaste and toothbrush without caring how they are brushing. The brushing technique is equally important as the toothpaste and toothbrush.

Modified Bass Technique is the most accepted technique. Place your brush at a 45-degree angle to the gumline. Brush as a group of 2 or 3 teeth at a time starting from the last teeth. Brush with a mild vibratory or circular motion(20 strokes) on teeth surface followed by a swiping motion.

Swiping is done from the gum side towards the chewing surface ie, upper teeth should be swiped from up to down while lower teeth from down to up. Repeat these movements on all outer surfaces and inner(facing tongue) surfaces as small sections of 2 or 3 teeth. Then clean the chewing surface of the teeth by a mild back and forth motion.

If the backside of the front teeth is difficult by this method, you can hold the brush vertically and brush using small up and down strokes.

Most people brush the outer surface of the teeth ignoring the inner surface which is facing the tongue. This is one of the main reasons why plaque accumulation is more on the inner surface. We should always make sure that all surfaces of the teeth are cleaned effectively so that no debris is left behind, thus helping in maintaining healthy gums and teeth.
